Animate Projects, in partnership with the University of Derby and QUAD, is staging a symposium that takes the themes of the Silent Signal project as a departure point for a broader look at collaboration at the intersection of art, science and technology. The symposium takes place on Friday 26 February 2016, 10am – 5:30pm, at the College of Arts, University of Derby.
Silent Signal is an interdisciplinary project that brings together six artist and scientist partnerships to create animated artworks that explore research into genetics, immunology and epidemiology. The project is curated and produced by Animate Projects in collaboration with scientist Bentley Crudgington. Project partners include Vivid Projects, Imperial College London, QUAD and Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. The exhibition is at QUAD from 5 February to 5 March 2016.
The Silent Signal Symposium will include a keynote address by curator Hannah Redler and presentations from some of the Silent Signal project collaborators. We are inviting proposals for additional presentations of around 10 minutes that will be shared as part of the panel discussions and published online. We are also inviting proposals for full papers (around 2-3,000 words) to be published online, and that may also be considered for future publication.
Proposals are welcome around, but not limited to, the following themes:
• The creativity of science and the rigour of artistic practice – where the two fields intersect
• Interdisciplinary collaboration between artists, scientists and technologists and the mutual benefit this can bring
• How artists can make use of scientific data to communicate complex ideas to inspire audiences
• Using art to explore our anxieties about advances in science and technology and to celebrate our achievements
Submissions are now closed. Deadline: Thursday 26 November, 9am
Successful applicants will be notified by Friday 18 December
Those invited to present at the symposium will receive a complimentary ticket to the event, as well as a modest fee and travel expenses
